60Hertz is a microgrid service company for remote Arctic communities. 60Hertz is co-designing and developing a mobile application with power plant operators and the entities supporting them to optimize maintenance programs and catch mistakes before they become expensive equipment failures.

Arctic Armor Spill Recovery

A U.S. patent called “Methods and apparatus for mechanical recovery of hydrocarbons in broken ice conditions” was just issued for this new technology. It uses the perimeter of a barge or vessel itself as the point of collection – through an armored “bumper” that contains an array of pods at the water’s surface – as a reinforced filtration system for oil spill recovery in broken ice conditions. This idea also won the Arctic Kicker Award.

3rd Place – $3,000

Zipr Shift Klōs® – Modern, Sustainable Closure

The Zipr Shift Klōs® is a bio-inspired closure that mimics the spine in order to achieve the features essential for a flexible, durable, hermetic closure. The Klōs® is a synergy of the two current standards of zipper technology: the slide fastener comprised of rigid teeth or coils, and the wholly flexible press-to-close fastener of packaging.

FERRERAS Drill Alignment Tool

The FERRERAS Drill Alignment Tool is an adjustable tool for drilling bolt holes in order to install column caps on foundation pilings. It can be used with a variety of piling and bolt sizes and enables perfectly aligned, consistently straight holes to be drilled through pilings.

Youst: Virtual Reality Garage Sale

Youst creates 360° virtual reality tours for anybody with multiple items to sell. Youst goes to the seller’s residence and uses a high-end 360° camera to record the items for sale. Virtual tour-producing software then creates virtual reality-enhancing buttons and layouts that will include pricing information, YouTube reviews, downloads to manuals, and more, with links to purchase the items.

Restangles is a collapsible six-sided rectangular cuboid developed to help alleviate inflammation, reduce strain on joints in the lower extremities, and reduce lower back pain while a person is in the seated position.  When collapsed, Restangles folds flat so that it will fit inside of a carry-on piece of luggage or another similar bag. When assembled, it is a sturdy, lightweight “leg rise” or “foot rest”.

This idea protects electrical conductors from damage in winter months by installing compressive fillers that deform under ice expansion to avoid power outages and repair costs.

JawLogic is a software system that provides consistent, ideal, adjustment-free, therapeutic dental and sleep apnea appliances and dental restorations that are custom designed for a specific patient. JawLogic utilizes long understood tenants of mandibular (lower jaw) position and movement in health and therapy, and applies those principles to an individual’s problem and circumstance.

Arctic Automatic

The Arctic Automatic is an energy-saving device designed to optimize the amount of electric power needed to start an internal combustion engine in freezing weather. This is accomplished by the use of an on-board microcontroller to determine when power is applied to various electrical heating devices, graduating the amount of power as the temperature drops.
